In a blog post on Huffpost, The Power of Spoken Words, the author, Dr Hyder Zeahed described words be “the most powerful force available to humanity” and to “have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble”. The post was on spoken words – words that we use on others and its effects on them. If the words we use on others have the potential to leave a huge impact on the people around us, now imagine its impact on ourselves.
Internal Monologue: Voices in My Head
We talk to ourselves all the time.
Some of us are probably doing it right now, wondering “do I talk to myself?” And if you are a lady, you probably do it twice as much as compared to the average man. These internal monologues occurs all the time, when we are silently reading or when we are thinking. Most of the time, we do it unknowingly and without much thought.
Loosely described as our thoughts – words that we use on ourselves, often under our breath or illustrated by a voice in our head, these words have great effects on what we believe we can do. Many are even guilty of having a lousy habit of putting ourselves down with words like “I am not good enough”, “I am ugly, no one will love me”, or “I will never be able to succeed”.
How to be motivated with words?
Start using empowering words and experience the wonders of the power of words for yourself. Have a go, feel it for yourself and see if you are able to pick out the more useful and empowering word choice:
I Do My Best vs. I Try
‘I do my best’ implies that you all give it your all, that you are ready to do whatever it takes to get what needs to be done, completed and to the best of your ability. On the other hand, ‘trying’ implies that you will get moving to attempt the task, but gives the feeling that even you are unsure if you would be good enough.

I Want To vs. I Have To
When you ‘want to’, things get exciting, colorful and you feel in control. It encourages you to take ownership of what you are doing and to give it you all. ‘Having to’, on the other hand, discourages and demotivates. Often, it leaves you with the feeling that you did not have choice and there is nothing you can do in the current circumstance.
I Must vs. I Would Like To
When you convince yourself that you must, you are programming your mind to find different ways and strategies to get you to where you want to be. You begin to do everything in your power to achieve the goals that you set. When you say that you ‘would like to’, your mind understands it as ‘yes, it would be great to get there, but even if you do not, it’s probably fine’. This opens yourself up to excuses, complaints and might even end up blaming others when you do not get the results you want.
The words we say to ourselves are so powerful that they can literally turn on or turn off your brains! Choose to always talk to yourself in away that will excite and motivate you. Actively use positive words that will put us into an empowering state where we will be motivated to act and produce amazing results.
